Words: John Brereton IRELAND MUSIC WEEK SPECIAL -
EDITORS PICKS albeit dressed in a sparkly glitter dress, Telekura may be the discovery of the Festival. They wowed at We’ve Only Just Begun delivering a psychedelic synth-pop masterclass. Have tunes, will travel. Cabl This four piece makes great noise and are currently recording their debut album with Robocobra Quartet genius Chris Ryan at the controls. It’s a win win. Makeshift Art Bar Noise provocateurs from Belfast, these guys are the biz. The mood is dark, the noise is heavy but there’s also a delicious 80’s indie sensibility running through the melodics. Theatre Dream Boy Another four piece who use guitars to create walls of beautiful noise that set the scene for lead vocalist Allie Ryan to spin her hazy magic. Martina & The Moons This four piece wouldn’t have been out of place on stage at Croker recently. Elements of classic 90’s Indie are there but it’s the classy pop of recent single ‘Dixon Avenue’ that’ll ultimately be their calling card. Our cover stars haven’t released any music yet but are on the tips of everyone’s tongue. They had the smarts to grasp early on that they needed to be better on tape (and to take it easy on social media) so have diligently worked hard behind the scenes to realise that. It could be viewed as a salutary lesson for bands but, in fairness, not every band has a singer like Maeve O’Shea out front. God Knows A vital cog in the Rusangano Family wheelhouse, Limerick’s God Knows has achieved a lot already but this man is only getting started taking Irish hip hop into new, unchartered waters. Pôt-pot Featuring the irrepressible Elaine Malone, this country straddling outfit (Portugal/Ireland) also feature Elaine’s fellow Corkonian Sara Leslie (Ana Palindrome) in a line up that ploughs a thrilling furrow in drone psyche. Debut album Warsaw 480km is out this September. Watch it fly. Goldbug Another Chris Ryan production project, French/Irish artist Goldbug has already performed in the National Concert Hall backed by the Crash Ensemble. The music is otherworldly, the vibe is fresh. Art Rock rules. 10 Zoe Basha A member of the imperious, painfully shy Rufous Nightjar, Basha released a beauty of a solo album recently - Gamble - that showcased the warm, country/jazz/folk tinged tunes that she effortlessly traverses. Ireland Music Week is citywide from Oct 1st - 3rd. www.irelandmusicweek.com for tickets and line up info. Telekura Another new act riding on the krautrock trans European express,
