The Goo 1
Interview continued ... WE FEATURE AS MUCH IRISH
AS WE FEATURE, BECAUSE ON THAT GIVEN WEEK, THAT’S THE AMOUNT THAT WE LIKE ... The station’s commitment to playing Irish music is well known and highly regarded. Why do you think other stations are not as committed as 8Radio is to championing homegrown music? What the 8Radio team believes in, is - truthfully; Playing the music we like. There is vast talent in Ireland - this is an established fact. We feature as much Irish as we feature, because on that given week, that’s the amount that we like. If that’s more than others, we didn’t set out to do that particularly. We’re certainly in favour of it. But we didn’t plan it. I know that sounds rehearsed - but it’s the truth, and as you said, it’s something our audience, and the artists that we feature, both appreciate. This question comes up in one form or another a few times in 10 years, as you can imagine - and that’s the simplest way I’ve found to describe it. Playing the music we like, some of which happens to be Irish. What are your hopes and aspirations for 8Radio for the next decade? Permanence of platform for 8Radio - online, on FM, on DAB, and on whatever format comes next. To see 8Radio continue to attract music fans who have been lost in one way or another to traditional models of music listening and new music discovery. I want 8Radio to be a part of whatever the audience wants today, and tomorrow. I want 8Radio to continue to build great working relationships with our partners, clients and advertisers, and our various counterparts in the wider music world - here in Ireland, and Internationally. And finally, to develop a good relationship with the new Media Commission, which replaces the BAI, whom we also worked closely with to deliver multiple FM campaigns over the last decade. We want to engage the Commission and the Communications Minister, and play an active role in defining the next era of Radio. * See page 46 for 8RADIO FM broadcast details.
