EPT 14TH BONNY LIGHT HORSE MAN & THE RTE CONCERT ORCHESTRA - NATIONAL CONCERT HALL - SEPT 14TH Anaïs Mitchell, Eric D. Johnson and Josh Kaufman began their transatlantic traditional folk musical experiment together in 2018. Their self-titled ‘Bonny Light Horseman’ and ‘Rolling Golden Holy’ albums were critically acclaimed and presented the trio’s direction toward traditional songs from the British Isles. Tonight we get to hear those songs in all their orchestral glory - featuring new arrangements for the orchestra by The Nationals Bryce Dessner. Highly recommended. JOAN SHELLEY - WHELANS - SEPT 5TH Joan Shelley is a songwriter and singer who draws inspiration musically and lyrically from her native Kentucky, as well as those from Ireland, Scotland, and England, but she’s not a folksinger. More Dolly Parton than June Carter Shelley has shared shows with Bonnie KARA JACKSON - SPET 10TH “Prince” Billy, Doug Paisley and Michael Hurley, opened for Wilco and Richard Thompson and had Jeff Tweedy produce her last album. Everything here shouts pedigree so definitely a show for the purists. KARA JACKSON - WORK MANS CELLAR - SEPT 10TH Wielding her voice like a honey-coated blade, Kara Jackson crafts a blend of emotional folk music and poetic alt-country. Raised by country folk and Black feminist poets like Gwendolyn Brooks and Lucille Clifton, Kara’s songs have the softness and warmth of a southern drawl and, Black Queer polymath that she is, earned her the prestigious and coveted honour of being 2019’s National Youth Poet Laureate and releasing her debut EP A Song for Every Chamber of the Heart in the same year. LAEL NEALE - THE WORKMANS - SEPT 14TH One of the highlights of last year’s Dun Laoghaire Folk Festival, US artist Lael Neal returns showcasing her wonderful lo-fi platter Star Eaters Delight, recently released on Sub Pop. Backed by drum machine and her signature Omnichord, the album has been quoted as “ like 70s folk artist Karen Dalton hanging out with the Velvet Underground and Suicide, while the rest offers somewhat more modern balladry, placing her more in the world of Angel Olsen and Cat Power”. Nuff said! DAISY THE GREAT - THE WORKMANS - SEPT 15TH Hailing from Brooklyn, Daisy The Great are essentially Kelley Nicole Dugan and Mina Walker, two songwriters/vocalists who fashion whip-smart alt Bedroom pop tunes that hark back PAGE 5 DAISY THE GREAT - SEPT 15TH to the classic writings of The Carpenters or Jack Johnson while imbuing them with the sensibilities of bands like The Bangles or Indigo Girls. New album All You Need Is Time is full of clever arrangements, sweet harmonies and interesting chord progressions, although the dual lead vocal will divide opinions.
