His fab new album ‘The Last Remaining Light’ is testament to Johnstons ability to pay respects to influences while digging out a new groove and tonight’s show - with full band in tow - is eagerly anticipated. ROBOCOBRA QUARTET - THE GRAND SOCIAL - SEPT 23RD Welcome return for one of our islands best bands, the thrilling Belfast based jazz/ punk/improv quintet (sic). Improvisation and experimentation is at the core of Robocobra Quartet’s DNA, whether it be in the fluidity of their line-up or in their unique records which flirt with choral groups and string sections - almost intentionally at odds with their ostensible roots as a postpunk band. Highly recommended. DO NOTHING - WHELANS - SEPT 23RD ‘Snake Sideways’, the debut album by Nottingham four piece Do Nothing, is on course to be one of our albums of the year. We hear echoes of Magazine fronted by David Sylvian, you may hear different but hopefully you’ll agree that this is cool, verbose songwriting at its finest. Rising Dublin act Big Sleep support so get in early to check them out.
