Recommends Gig Previews CODEINE - WHELANS - AUG 3
0TH Playing their first shows in over a decade, New Yorkers Codeine - who almost singlehandedly invented what would later become known as “slowcore”, predating influential albums by kindred spirits Low and Duster by almost half a decade - roll into town highlighting their ‘lost’ album, ‘Dessau’, recorded in 1992 but only seeing the light of day last year on Sub Pop. Adrian Crowley & Matthew Nolan open proceedings adding undeniable lustre to a highly recommended show. MABE FRATTI - NATIONAL CONCERT HALL (THE STUDIO) - SEPT 1ST On her 2021 album Será que ahora podremos entendernos, the Guatemalan-born, Mexico City-based cellist, composer, and singer spun vast, verdant worlds out of tangled loops and layers. Showcasing her new album Se Ve Desde Aquí tonight, Fratti’s lilting cello lines and high, plaintive voice, often multitracked or run through AutoTune, entwined above dense thickets of synthesiser and reverb are back, though rawer than before. Fratti recalls Kate Bush, not only in her melodic choices, but also in her ability to blend the intuitive with the unknown, to make the alien seem second nature. KEN STUART TRIBUTE CONCERT W/ CONOR GUILFOYLE OCTET - ARTHURS - SEPT 2ND This looks wonderful. A night dedicated to the memory and legacy of Ken Stuart, a stalwart of the Dublin jazz scene from the late 60’s to the early 80’s. Stuart was a fine pianist/vibist/composer who played with Louis Stewart, Dick Buckley, John Wadham, as well as having a duo with Tommy Halferty. An Ellington specialist, tonight’s show for Ken will be in three parts; Halferty playing duo with Scott Flanigan, a quartet and finally the Octet set of Duke Ellington arrangements. BRAZIL DAY - NATIONAL STADIUM - SEPT 2ND & 3RD. The 11th annual Brazilian cultural festival of music, dance, food, arts & crafts and community activities in Ireland takes place over the weekend and is a great opportunity to join the Brazilian community and friends to experience lots of fun and PAGE 4 MABE FRATTI - SEPT 1ST ROBOCOBRA QUARTET - SEPT 23RD entertainment. There will be three stages of live music and DJ’s, including DJ Samuuh, DJ Heron, the Guto Piazza Trio, Morro 16, Rio Soul Samba, 353 Samba Club, Cantito Dublin, Banda Absoletos, Luana Matos Axé Band and many more. Sunday sees the Brazilian pagode sensation Ferrugem play his Dublin debut live show. BIG|BRAVE & JESSICA MOSS - THE WORKMAN’S CELLAR - SEPT 6TH Fascinating double bill with ecstatic doom metallers, BIG|BRAVE of Montreal teaming up with Montréal-based violinist, composer and artist Jessica Moss (Thee Silver Mt Zion/ Evangelista). BIG|BRAVE - like label mates Sunn O))) - harness an earthen heaviness composed of distorted and textural drones, austere bombast, and Wattie’s heart-rending voice while Moss albums are distinguished by a semi-improvised, through-composed melodic acumen that often channels Klezmer, Balkan and Middle Eastern tropes alongside Minimalism and drone, with an ear for textural grit and timbral noise. FEIST - NATIONAL STADIUM - SEPT 6TH Canadian Leslie Feist has been one of the most invigorating artists of the last twenty years and tonight’s show should be a cracker. Her new album ‘Multitudes’ is a beauty, a deeply personal, cathartic journey into the big themes of birth and death. It’s certainly not as groovy as previous work but like everything precious, the rewards are greater the deeper you dig. DAVID KEENAN - NATIONAL CONCERT HALL - SEPT 13TH Big night ahead for the bard of Dundalk as he showcases his latest album, Crude, an album that saw Keenan roll up his sleeves and return to his roots. The album is rawer than previous work and all the better for it but its the word play and delivery that still shines brightly through. Keenan lives for stages like the NCH so this should be a special one. FEIST - SPET 6TH
