PATRICKS FESTIVAL QUARTER In the not too distant past, putting Irish music and St Patrick’s Day in the same sentence conjured up images of tin pot trad outfits miming on the back of a lorry while tourist trap bars blasted out a Spotify mix of U2, Mark McCabe, The Corrs, B*Witched and The Irish Rovers. It stank; pandered mainly to tourists and totally disregarded any craving the city’s inhabitants had for a bit of a genuine celebration of Irish culture. It’s still around in places but we’ve grown up, kopped on and invested in our talent to now program events like what’s happening at the St Patrick’s Festival Quarter in Collins Barracks and its environs between March 15th and 18th. It’s a fascinating program that incorporates music, dance, theatre, literature, storytelling, art, poetry and our inherent grá for the craic but through the new prisms of our multicultural communities and is well worth at least one visit over the National festivities. Our cover featured artists NewDad are one of the number of artists at the vanguard of this new wave of burgeoning Irish talent. Formed in a Galway secondary school in 2018 the band have made all the right noises and moves and, with the release of their debut album Madra on Atlantic Records, have a great journey in music ahead. Their two Button Factory gigs on Feb 28th & 29th are long sold out so don’t miss out next time around. Trycksak 5041 0004 Another young band embarking on their own adventure are HAVVK, a two piece from Lusk in North County Dublin. Fronted by Julie Hawkʼs dynamic, soaring vocal, HAVVKʼs music staggers between blistering punk and blissful shoegaze and with a live show where lyrically they tackle topics such as bodily autonomy, gender expression and mental health, the ingredients for a combustible experience are all there, ready for liftoff. They release their new album To Fall Asleep on their own label Veta Records and launch it with a special show in The Workmans on March 22nd. We are very excited to announce that the brilliant crew at Four Four Magazine are teaming up with The Goo to bring you all their expertise and knowledge of the local and international dance music scene. They join us this month with the first edition of their monthly Ultimate Guide to Dublin Dance-floors (courtesy of Max Heyraud) and will be curating pages of scene news, interviews and club listings from next month on. Sounders all, we are honoured to have them with us. PAGE 3 S E V A R N Ä E M N K T
