The Goo 1
Interview ANDREW PEARD After scouring the Liberti
es for a quiet enough place to conduct an interview, and stopping for a pint at each stop along the way, I found myself in a dimly lit cellar with Digdeep Saxophonist Patrick, Bassist Sam and their lead singer, who opted to be named as Mort in order to protect his identity. So why Digdeep? Where did that name come from? Patrick: A puppet! We used to stay with our friend a lot, and their dad has a therapy puppet, turned drinking buddy. It’s a huge mannequin that he’d dress up and bring to the pub with him, and he called it Digdeep. We’d bring him to the pub in a wheelchair. Mort: We’d leave him beside other people in the pub and say “can you mind my dad for a minute?” And if you stayed over at our mates, and woke up in the middle of the night to go out for a piss, he’d be in front of your door sitting there. P: I had to housesit the house for their cats, and ‘Digdeep’ was the fuckin scariest… horrible. I once put on a Will Ferrell movie and I swear I heard him laugh. How did you guys start making music? M: Well I’d been making really bad SoundCloud rap. Sam: It was like ok soundcloud rap. Like most Irish rappers are worse. M: This is why Sam’s my best friend. P: You had that ‘Strawberry Skies’ song that was pretty good. M: I had one hit! So I was doing that, and then at some stage in PMacs (RIP), Patrick asked to start a band, and I’d been asking Patrick to start a band for the last ten years, so I immediately said yes. Started a group chat, added Leigh (Guitarist). P: Then Leigh knew Sam and brought him in, and later down the PAGE 42 line we got Zack (drummer). S: Yeah, we found him on… what’s the app called? Mort: It’s like Tinder for musicians, I can’t remember the name. P: Our friends are in a band called Post-party. One of the guys in the band was having a house party, one last big festival in his gaff before he moved out. He said “Patrick and Morgan, you guys have been making some music, you should play” M: So we made a band! Any Irish artists you’ve been into recently? P: John Francis Flynn’s new album is so good. Lankum… ØXN. ØXN especially, their new album really done it for me. M: I really like Pretty Happy. They’re a noise rock band from Cork. They’re nuts. They don’t even have many songs out but I eat up every single one. Any sounds outside of Ireland inspiring you right now? P: I’ve been listening to a lot of Ty Segall. S: A lot of Samba, a lot of traditional Brazilian stuff. For some reason, for the past year, it’s just all I want to listen to. And Rosinha De Valença, she’s my guitar crush. You all have a great stage presence. Do you have any preperformance warmups? P: Getting pretty hammered normally haha. M: Ah, on stage that’s just me. I just like messing around on stage. Anything on the way? M: Headwreck music video just came out. EP out by the end of the year hopefully and a big headliner. P: Summer is for finishing recording and mixing. M: We’ll be making cassette tapes as well! Who are you recording with? P: Headwreck was with Dan Fox from Gilla. This time we’ll be heading down to Longford to record with Keelan from PostParty, in the Transmission rooms which is our favorite place to record. What’s involved? P: Very serious business. Mort: The last time we went down we’d do the songs, and then around 3am we’d have a new idea and go record that. P: Yeah we’d stay in Longford for around five days, come up with some stuff late in the evening, and run down to the studio, Mort: And then you’d listen back in the morning… shake your head and say “delete it”. Anyone you wanna thank before we finish up? M: I wanna thank DigDeep the puppet and (redacted controversial statement about a popular Irish band). P: I was chatting to my mate on the bus here, and I told her I was getting interviewed for the Goo and she said “don’t be a hater,” M. Oh no, we’re not gonna get any more gigs…. Don’t worry, I’ll keep that one off the record. Digdeep have just released their new single ‘Headwreck’. They play live in The Grand Social on April 11th with Under Starling. @digdeep_band.
