Gig Previews Recommends ØXN - VICAR STREET - 29TH
FEBRUARY Like their debut Dublin performances last winter, this sold out show at Vicar Street promises to be a tectonic affair. Enthusiastic Eunuch and Foggy Notions once more endeavouring to bring together Katie Kim, Radie Peat of Lankum, and Ellie Myler and John ‘Spud’ Murphy to weave their pitchdark spells amid endearing banter to the lucky acolytes who signed up early. The lesson is evident, buy tickets as soon as the folk doom quartet announce one of their ceremonies. Transcendent times. SEAMUS FOGARTY - WORKMANS CELLAR - MARCH 2ND London Bound Irish alt folk hero Seamus Fogarty brings meticulous songcraft seamed through with a singular approach to electronica and experimentalism to the Workmans Cellar, courtesy of the equally heroic Foggy Notions. Last year’s surreal and beautiful ‘Hee Haw’ EP is a stunning example of the man’s unique lyricism and inspired songwriting. Essential participation if you like your folk a little frazzled. THEE U.F.O - WORKMANS CELLAR - MARCH 2ND The Dublin psychelia infused garage rock outfit bring their heady, heavy sounds to the dimlit confines of the Workmans to kick off March. Wild eyed experimentalism and fuzzed out rock that brings to mind the Japanese krautrock inspired explorations of Boredoms as much as the clever songsmithing of New York post punk. ĠENN - WHELANS UPSTAIRS - MARCH 2ND Showcasing their uber cool debut album Unum, the Maltese/English post punk/art rock four piece Genn sing about life, race, identity, and art in the postBrexit landscape with attitude, aggression and style. Well worth checking out. THE PHARCYDE - THE SUGAR CLUB - MARCH 3RD When the South Central L.A quartet released their eccentric debut album, Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde, in 1991 it quickly went gold and has gone on to become one of the most influential rap albums of all time. Check out the immense video for the album’s key track ‘Passin’ Me By’ on YouTube. After support slots for De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest as well as a successful spot on Lollapalooza’s second stage in 1994, the group released PAGE 4 CLARK - MARCH 15TH its second album, Labcabincalifornia, a mellower offering but no less warped. If you’re into rap or hip hop this is unmissable. CALUM AGNEW - WHELANS - MARCH 5TH In his Whelan’s Ones To Watch review in this issue, our scribe Ethan Golding said that Calum Agnew was “a Sam Smith type with tons more charisma and humanity” and also urges TV show bookers to nab him now. Before he explodes this is as good a time as any to check out what the new wave of Irish pop sounds like. THE SMILE - 3ARENA - MARCH 7TH The Smile is Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood’s incredible new project with Sons of Kemet drummer Tom Skinner and has been blowing minds since the first whispers of songs that became ‘A Light for Attracting Attention’. With ‘Wall of Eyes’, the trio cemented themselves as far more than a Radiohead offshoot, exploring psychedelia and krautrock with the slippery time signatures and incredibly clever idiosyncrasies that have characterised the decades the pair have stood at the cusp of contemporary music. THE HARVEST MINISTERS - WHELANS UPSTAIRS - MARCH 14TH Dublin alternative veterans The Harvest Ministers take to a familiar haunt. Celebrating 30 years of the classic ‘Little Dark Mansion’ last November, they return to showcase selections from their extensive back catalogue while previewing tracks from an imminent new album. CLARK - WHELANS - MARCH 15TH For the first time in over ten years, Whelans will host an evening with Clark to launch the critically acclaimed ‘Sus Dog’. The revered Warp artist has been honing his intense, individual sound for over two decades, with his talents called upon to remix tracks from Thom Yorke, Nils Frahm and Massive Attack. CIARAN MORAN - THE GRAND SOCIAL - MARCH 16TH The honest, thoughtful songwriting of Ciaran Moran has won over contemporaries like Christy Moore, Glen Hansard and the late Christy Dignam. With his ‘Life Inner City’ EP garnering much adulation in 2022, this show over the St. Patricks weekend show promises to be a fantastic opportunity to enjoy some plainspoken, genuine songcraft. GENN
