Scene News NIALL MCGUIRK LABEL OF THE MONTH LOTM
is the ever-improving Advance Records which incorporates FOAD Records. Here’s three great releases just hitting the streets this month from them. Various Artists - Bullshit 2024 In the words of Peter Jones, Advance Records head honcho and guitarist for Paranoid Visions, the Lee Harveys and many more “For me, the original Bullshit Detector albums served as a massive influence and catalyst… it was the opposite of Joe Strummer telling people to get a guitar and form a band, while playing in one of the best bands of all time… it was actually presenting the platform and saying WE CAN DO THIS. The major punk bands were all unattainable to us mere mortals and with the financial backing that even the smallest of the ’77 bands had, any form of release seemed impossible until these releases came out. With Bullshit 2024, like its predecessor and the rest of the No Romance releases, I’m trying to recapture the essence of the crass record label with top quality aesthetics and imagery, great records and great value. So, I’m particularly delighted to get this release off the ground. As mentioned originally, this will be out on black vinyl with a 4-page cover, I’m keeping all costs as low as possible and like the 80’s releases, we are making no attempt to improve or edit the tracks…just balancing volume This record is a great collection of unreleased material from up-and-coming bands like menofpause, Baggles and Butch, Arcadian Shadows, The Prongs, pxbx and many more. It is rough and ready just like the way so much music is meant to be. PAGE 40 Molly Vulpyne - Amortise Last month I mentioned the release gig for Molly Vulpynes new record, Amortise, on Feb 24. The ep is being released by the prolific FOAD label and is available on red/black 12” vinyl and/or CD. It will be released at the launch gig in Whelan’s on February 24th (alongside the marvellous sounds of Arcadian Shadows and The Frenzy of Tongs). If you’ve missed the gig, you can always get it online or from some of Dublin’s finest record stores. Various Artists - Dublin Crust Soundtrack This is the original soundtrack for the recent cult indie film Dublin Crust. It’s on gold vinyl and has songs from bands like The Dubtones, Paranoid Visions, The Jollars, The Black Pitts, The Lee Harveys, Sympos, The Nilz and so many more. Like the film it’s a step into the murky shadows of the Dublin punk scene and is a cracking soundtrack. advancerecords.com The self-titled ‘A Lethal Black Ooze’ EP & Bonus ‘Live at Ailfionn’ session was recorded by the band following those crazy days of lockdown in Ireland. It is a slab of 12” black vinyl that brings us on the journey of a band that has just recently found its sound. Side A is the band’s debut EP - Side B is an unedited, straight to tape live session from Dublin’s Ailfionn Studios. This very limited deluxe vinyl is one of only one hundred in existence. Available from the band’s Bandcamp page. GIG NEWS Psychotic Reaction put on some great gigs and always have a good, varied line-up. Their next one on Mar 1 is no different with Dumb Posh Hippies, City Pets, Daddee And Skie playing in Fibbers It seemed so far away when I first mentioned Rebellious Jukebox last year but “There will be no end of thrills, spills and probably a few shocks at the Culture Shocks, Punk Rock Festival at RCC Letterkenny on Friday 8th and Saturday 9th of March. The festival features eleven great bands over the two days, and a ticket can be yours for an inflation-busting €40. You wouldn’t get a bus ticket to any other festival for that. The Defects, 999, The Outcasts, The Nilz, Paranoid Visions, 50 Foot Woman and Shame Academy are some of the names on offer One half of the vocal attack from Paranoid Visions is Aoife Destruction who is playing a gig in Whelan’s with the Nilz on March 8. It is a bit of a departure from the Visions brooding Punk rock so we can expect tunes all night along with Limerick’s 50 Foot Woman and M.A.D from Longford coming up to the big smoke to represent the midlands. Immaculate Deception are celebrating the release of their album with a gig in Fibbers on Mar 22. Also playing are Porphyria, Inflatable Dolls and making their debut bringing some super post punk Talking Knives.
