MAY-JUNE 23 PICS: MICHAL MENCNAROWSKI since. Towa
rds the end of Narciss’s closing set, we were up on the stage with signs and the crowd started chanting ‘Trans lives matter’. It was a super special moment that I’ll never forget. Not all the signs are super political, we like to do a mix and throw in a few ridiculous ones to keep it fun and lighthearted. On the subject of the beginning of Rathaus, how do you feel it has evolved from its original concept and how did you get started? Myself and Kenya decided to start Rathaus after moving back to Dublin from Berlin. Initially our concept for it was a liberated techno and pop party but it’s developed into so much more than that. I see it more as a community than a club night - we have the most amazing crowd who have supported us since day one. Our aim with Rathaus was and is to use our platform to support local and marginalised artists - DJs/ performers and visual artists. It is amazing working with such passionate and creative people. How did you know that the reception would be good for the events and social media presence considering the subject matter could be seen as relatively taboo to some? With the first few we didn’t know how they would go, we had no clue what we were doing, to be honest. We had no idea the party would become so successful so early on either! I’m surprised we didn’t have any angry Catholics in our DMS after the last event for Holy Thursday. The inclusion of art installations at your events is really interesting. It creates a multi-faceted event. What made you decide to include artists in your events? Thank you! It was Kenya who came up with the idea, the art and techno scenes in Dublin don’t mix too often so we thought it would be a good idea. As I mentioned before we want Rathaus to be a platform that supports artists so it’s always nice to make the most out of the space we have and showcase local talent. The last few nights have been sellouts, what are your plans for the future? Are you thinking of expanding or do you want to keep it intimate? We have a few exciting projects coming up including a big n sexy 12hr Pride Party with the NSFW crew at The Grand Social and a merch drop very soon but other than that we’ve no major plans for expanding - I think a part of why Rathaus is so special is the fact that it’s an intimate party. For anyone that has been watching Rathaus from the sidelines and maybe is nervous to go, what would you tell them? Just do it, I know it can be a little bit intimidating but honestly, our crowd is the total opposite of stuck-up. Everyone is just there to have a buzz, dance, and connect with one another. Myself and Kenya always around so if you’re still nervous on the night come and have a chat or drink with us. As much as we encourage people to dress up and express themselves if that’s not your thing you don’t have to. As long as you’re sound you belong at Rathaus!
