ic Company Expect some classics from the stalwarts of the scene, new collaborations in experimental improv, and some visiting guest stars to look forward to. The Dublin Jazz Co-op continues at The Workman’s on Sundays with their new series curated by bassist Eoin O’Halloran, featuring Izumi Kimura and Jaki Irvine’s new collaboration in thought-provoking, experimental improv on 28th May, and Eoin’s own uplifting and adventurous trio with Hugh Denman and Yuzuha O’Halloran on 11th June. Arthur’s Blues & Jazz Club are platforming stalwarts of the scene and giving you a chance to see the next generation in the making. Dynamic guitarist John Moriarty’s hard-grooving quartet features on the 20th of May, and house band the Dirty Jazz Club shows the best of tight ensemble playing on the 27th. Newpark Music’s summer jazz showcase on 25th is a chance to hear the next generation of young musicians riffing on favourite classics. May into June is looking like a fantastically eclectic month for jazz in Dublin... Richie Buckley’s quintet on 28th May is a favourite lineup of Dublin’s jazzers doing what they do best. For those DARTing from the city in the evenings, The Whale Theatre in Greystones is also picking up some exciting improv in their programming, with Philip Christie’s experimental ensemble The Bonk on the 25th May, and a visit from the star Fabian Willmann Trio with renowned drummer Jeff Ballard on 26th. Some classic jazz favourites are coming up this month too, as drummer Conor Guilfoyle pays tribute to Miles Davis for his 100th birthday on the 26th May with a show in the Bello Bar, and the Hot House Big Band return with all their flair to Harry’s on the Green on the 28th. On the 27th, for those in love with songs and the singers, legendary jazz vocalist Christine Tobin brings her interpretations of Leonard Cohen to the beautiful surroundings of Farmleigh House. PAUL DUNLEA Moving into June, guitarist Hugh Buckley’s new organ trio Purple Dayz grooves through the pop/rock favourites of the 60s and 70s at Arthur’s, with a jazz spin. Same room with a very different sound on the 15th June when Cork trombonist and composer Paul Dunlea brings his finely balanced melodies and delicate sound palette in with some originals, old favourites, and maybe even a sneak peek at an upcoming release. To taste some of the world’s finest in contemporary jazz, Music Network’s jazz tour with renowned bassist Linda May Han Oh and pianist Fabian Alzaman kicks off, with Dublin dates in the Pavilion Dún Laoghaire on the 14th and the Sugar Club coming up later on the 20th. RICHIE BUCKLEY If you’re struck with a lastminute jazz craving, there’s always a line-up of great regular gigs running around the city, like Nigel Mooney’s Sunday afternoon jazz, 4pm at the United Arts Club, Jazz at the Americana on Wednesday night, Thursday night, and Sunday brunch, Searson’s Sunday Jazz at 6pm with Stella Bass, Dashi Thursday night jazz in Smithfield, and regular jams on Thursdays at the Bohemian, Sundays at the International, or Sunday afternoons at the Hot Spot in Greystones.
