CLIODHNA RYAN Scene News THE SIXTEEN - JUNE 20TH
CLASSICAL We have a wonderful month of exciting music ahead, from the baroque to the brand new... Let’s begin at the National Concert Hall, for a concert from the chamber ensemble Elvana titled ‘Perfect Offering’, after a work by Cassandra Miller, which in turn is named after the Leonard Cohen song. With a programme including pieces by Jonathan Nangle, Jessie Montgomery, Jane O’Leary and John Corigliano, it’s going to be an evening of new discoveries for enquiring listeners. The concert is at 7pm on May 25th in the Kevin Barry Recital Room. Just a short stroll to Portobello next and to Kaleidoscope, Dublin’s favourite music salon. On June 7th at The Bello Bar you will hear everything from classical to contemporary music, with new folk, jazz and world music stirred into the mix. It’ll be a heady cocktail of exceptional performances, with renowned cellist William Butt playing Cassado’s Solo Cello Suite, the founder of Ensemble Éiru Neil Ó Lochlann and his ensemble Cuar giving us a few tunes from their latest album Umhaill, and singer songwriter Patrick Stephen performing songs imbued with jazz and world music harmonies and rhythms. The evening finishes with Vito Sputnik, an Argentinian tango duo, who will get your feet stamping and hands clapping before you sway off into the night. Curtain up is at 8.30pm. Next to another venue along the canal. From June 12th to 24th, the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre is playing host to the music of Leonard Bernstein, the lyrics of Stephen Sondheim and the choreography of Jerome Robbins. The internationally touring production of West Side Story, one of the greatest musicals of all time, is coming to Dublin. This thrilling and radical tale of two gangs and one love, with its immortal melodies and phenomenal choreography, continues to capture the hearts of audiences around the world. The much-loved NCH Tuesday Summer Lunchtime Series begins on June 13th, with a performance featuring Sinéad Farrell on piccolo performing Vivaldi’s dazzling C Major Concerto. The National Symphony Orchestra stay in the dramatic and beautiful realm of Italian music for the rest of the performance, with an intermezzo by Puccini, an overture by Verdi, and finally a colourful tribute to three of Botticelli’s masterworks by the composer Respighi. The concert starts at 1.05pm and is conducted by Adam Hickox. For all you film buffs and John Williams fans out there, you’ll be rushing into the nearest telephone booth you can find (which might be a struggle) to do a quick change into your Superman costume because yes, this epic film is coming to Dublin. The soaring original score by John Williams will be performed live by the National Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Anthony Gabriele. Superman in Concert is at the NCH on 16th-17th June at 7.30pm. In Dun Laoghaire is the fantastic Pavilion Theatre, where on Sunday 18th at 4pm you can hear some of the most promising operatic stars of the future perform with the Irish National Opera Orchestra. The Irish National Opera Studio works closely with some of the most promising Irish artists working in opera. This Studio Gala is a culmination of a year’s intensive training and is a chance to hear great operatic repertoire performed by Jade Phoenix, Kathleen Nic Dhiarmada, Madeline Judge, and Eoin Foran. The concert will be approximately 80 minutes without an interval, so you’ll still have plenty of time for a dip and an ice cream afterwards. Finally, let’s head back into the heart of Dublin, where The Sixteen, one of the world’s most renowned choral ensembles, return to the NCH with a special programme ‘Song In The Wilderness’ marking the 400th anniversary of the death of one of the greatest composers of the Renaissance, William Byrd. This programme explores the music of his influences, his colleagues, and his faith, and includes two new works by composer Dobrinka Tabakova. The Sixteen has been acclaimed worldwide for performances drawn from centuries of sacred and secular music, delivered with precision, power and passion. The concert is on June 20th at 8pm.
