MAY-JUNE 23 NEWDAD - MAY 24TH KNEECAP THE CURTIS
CABARET: A NIGHT AT THE MOVIES - SUGAR CLUB - MAY 26TH Return of this hugely popular night sees the talented cast pay tribute to classic tunes from the golden age of Hollywood right up to the present day, all in their own unique style and presentation. There will be tears, smiles and laughs aplenty as the cast prove that there’s no business like show business. RICHARD DAWSON - WHELAN’S - MAY 26TH A true original, Richard Dawson returns to Dublin - on his tod this time - to regale us with fantastical and sinister tales of the future, as proffered on his latest opus The Ruby Cord, the final part of a trilogy that started with the pre-medieval world of Peasant and was brought to the present day on 2020. The equally fab Myles Manley opens. DUNCAN MAITLAND, JOSS COPE & DJ KWOO - THOMAS HOUSE - MAY 26TH Stoke born, Dublin based musician Duncan Maitland and Liverpudlian Joss Cope join forces for a night of psychedelic blissfulness in the downstairs venue of Thomas House. Joss is the brother of Julian Cope but has had as interesting a musical journey as his more famous RICHARD DAWSON - MAY 26TH sibling. As well as playing alongside key members of the infamous Liverpool 80’s scene and joining the Mighty Lemon Drops, Cope was heavily involved with the mayhem of Creation Records and also played on Julians fab albums Fried and St. Julian. Both acts come rigged with full bands and a splendid night is guaranteed for all. CONOR GUILFOYLE OCTET - BELLO BAR - MAY 26TH A real treat for Jazz fans here as the esteemed Irish drummer leads his octet in celebrating the 100th birthday of the legendary Miles Davis. The first half of the program sees them performing new arrangements of Davis’s seminal Kind of Blue album while the second half tackles the equally brilliant Birth Of the Cool. This will sell out quickly so grab them tickets. THE BONK - SUGAR CLUB - MAY 27TH Our recent cover featured artists play their biggest Dublin gig to date tonight as they showcase the brilliant tunes that make up their superb second album Greater Than Or Equal To The Bonk. Ex O Emperor piano man Phil Christie spearheads an experimental line up that includes a twin brass attack that beautifully colours the bands wild, percussive musings. The spirit of Doctor John, Captain Beefheart and voodoo rock n roll lives on in these performing bodies making this gig a highly recommended one. SWIMMERS JACKSON - WORKMANS CELLAR - MAY 28TH Album launch party and performance for the London based artist who released his rather fine album Now Is All a few weeks back and has been touring around opening for Nina Nastasia, David Kitt, Jinx Lennon and Kila. Jackson’s sonic template is pitched somewhere in the 1990’s American college rock campus inhabited by the likes of REM and Weezer. FORBIDDEN FRUIT FESTIVAL - ROYAL HOSPITAL KILMAINHAM - JUNE 3RD & 4TH Celebrating its 11th edition the Forbidden Fruit Festival returns to the lovely RHK site offering a banging selection of prime electronic dance music with sprinklings of pop, house, funk, hip hop and R&B. While headliners Eric Prydz, Rina Sawayama and Central Cee will provide most of the big singalong moments, we’re banking on Slowthai and Channel Tres to be the stars of the show while Annie Mac and Honey Dijon bring some old skool dance for the more mature attendee. YOURCUZMARCUS - THE SOUND HOUSE - JUNE 9TH Championed recently in this journal and beyond by Jape, Dubliner YourCuzMarcus returns to the live stage after taking a year out to focus on the art of music production. The fruits of that hiatus is new single ‘Homecoming’, an alt urban influenced track that pays tribute to his native city and he celebrates his return with a gig in The Sound House. There’s a growing buzz around Marcus so this should be an ideal opportunity to catch a burgeoning artist as he takes off. JAH WOBBLE & THE INVADERS OF THE HEART - THE GRAND SOCIAL - JUNE 10TH His gig in the same venue a couple of years back was extraordinary, a controlled mish mash of dub reggae, chinese guzheng motifs, punk, world music, folk and industrial that left the audience breathless. The legendary Public Image Ltd bass player is a cherished maverick and conducts his superb band with humour and a cool panache that makes him a very special performer. Jah’s a top geezer on top of it all so mark this one as a must see. JAH WOBBLE - JUNE 10TH PAGE 5
