All No Romance record releases are available through www.noromance.ie THE NILZ INTERVIEW The NILZ are scruffy Irish purveyors of punk rock entertainment. Chris Nil plays bass, Backdoor Gary plays drums, Morto lead guitar, Iguana Andy rhythm guitar and Eddie the frontman. They have been on the go since 2015 and have released.2 EP’s ‘The Nilz Made Me Do It’ and ‘Kiss Me, My Executioner’. They also got together with their Swedish brothers ExistenZ and released a split on both Heptown & Deadlamb labels. Then in Feb last year they released their debut album Unicorn Hardsports which is a record “we’re really proud of”. I asked Eddie a few questions: Your live show is pretty entertaining. Is that a conscious premeditated effort or do you get up on stage and see what happens? “It’s a mix, a lot of what you see has come from spontaneous moments on stage where afterwards we’ve laughed about something that’s happened & then incorporated it because it works, however you can’t be too rigid with what goes on or it just becomes a gimmick so there is definitely a chaotic element running thru the band.” Should music be more than entertainment? “It is. We have songs with real messages in them, positive ones that the kids can take away a sense of community from, we know the youth that come to our gigs & we embrace them wholeheartedly as they are & encourage them to organise & create for themselves.” Eddie puts on gigs under the title Buddycore. He walks the walk he talks about. Buddycore are putting on monthly events in Fibbers. What's happening with Buddycore? What’s more fun playing a gig or putting one on? “It was a real blow to Buddycore losing Drop Dead Twice as a venue, then Fibbers came to us & offered us a bunch of dates so we’re still really trying to get back on our feet at the moment. That said, the punk network nationwide is as strong as it has ever been & that’s down to the likes of Relapse, West Coast punx, Ray Burke in Limerick, The Scuntz in Belfast, the Ballina punks, The deadbeats in Claremorris, John Foley & Jonny McKee, it’s vibrant with great bands not just in Dublin, Belfast & Cork but all over the shop. I much prefer just playing a gig rather than organising them, I get way too stressed tbh, that said though I’m forever encouraging the younger generation to organise so I have to practice what I preach.” This month's Buddycore gig is a national affair and sees Sympos bringing their OI infused sing along punk rock up from Waterford and pushing their new EP ‘More Sympos’. Also playing are Peer Pleasure (Wexford), R.P.C (Cork) and Menofpause (Dublin/Wicklow). PAGE 39
