MICK HERRITY Scene News NOV-DEC 2022 Ska, Roots a
nd Reggae Round-up WORRIES IN THE DANCE YA FRESHNESS A couple of issues ago I bemoaned the fact that there were no sound system gigs happening in Dublin. Just after the last issue went to print, word circulated on social media that Worries Outernational were throwing a free party in the Commercial Rowing Club on the Liffey. It’s a Dublin thing. Someone writes something off and, as if to say you’re talking shite, an event pops up to make you look foolish. So it goes, neither Rez nor Mikey thought to inform me. Even other members of the Worries crew didn’t know about the event until it was circulated on social media. The gig took place on Saturday 4th November. The Commercial Rowing Club is a perfect setting for a sound system event. There is no fear of disturbing neighbours. A pint of plain is a fiver. The only negative is the location, but the cheap pints make up for the cost of travel. Still, numbers were low at the club on the night. Those who were there were treated to the usual fare of nu roots, with plenty of tunes from the likes of Capleton, Sizzla, Damian Marley, Barrington Levy, Jr. Reid, etc. etc. Mikey finished off the night playing dubplates that Worries have added to their armoury over the years. For those who don’t know dubplates are one off tunes, or versions of a tune, that no one else in the world possesses. Rez informed me on the night that Worries will be setting up the sound in the commercial boat club every couple of months over the next while. Those of you who remember the legendary nights in Temple Bar and Sweeneys know what to expect. However, I can’t stress enough the difference that hearing the tunes through a proper sound system makes for experiencing reggae music. Watch out for future events. facebook.com/WorriesOuternatonal/ ROY ELLIS SOME FESTIVAL NEWS Early reggae and ska fans will welcome the news that Boss Reggae train selector Fuxy is organising a festival in Booleigh running from the 7th to the 9th July. So far Mr. Symarip, Dakky Ranks, Ya Freshness, Rough Kutz, Tonic all Stars, Skazz and Boss Sounds Manifesto are confirmed on the bill with more to be added. More information in future issues when available. Due to a communication mix up regarding deadlines, I have no set details of gigs coming up over the next couple of weeks. You can catch The Bionic Rats in The Foggy Dew on Sunday Nights and Double UP will be in The Thomas House on the first Saturday in December. PAGE 35
