Gig Previews continued GRANT LEE PHILLIPS - WHELA
NS - DEC 1ST With more than two decades’ experience first as frontman of the acclaimed Grant Lee Buffalo then as an accomplished solo artist, Phillips awakens comfort and hope by shining light into darker corners. His new album All That You Can Dream is born from the pandemic and is also rife with Phillips’ signature songwriting flourish: using rich historical references to illuminate modern truths. Ultan Conlon is his special guest. GIRLS AGAINST BOYS - WORKMANS CLUB - DEC 1ST Seminal post-hardcore band Girls Against Boys are on the road to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their critically acclaimed album House of GVSB and will be playing the album in full (along with plenty of material from across their canon). A pivotal part of Washington DC’s punk music scene, GVSB utilised an unusual mixture of instrumentation for a band with punk roots, including keyboards, samples, as well as two bass players on many songs. NORTH CIRCULAR - IFI - DEC 2ND ONWARDS North Circular is an award-winning documentary musical, shot beautifully in black and white, travelling the length of Dublin’s fabled North Circular Road, from the Phoenix Park to Dublin Port, meeting characters and hearing their personal stories, often told in music and song. The film celebrates the vibrant cultural heritage of the various neighbourhoods the road connects, along with addressing the challenges of living along the famed road. Its the documentary debut of Dublin based filmmaker Luke McManus and there’s contributions from Lisa O’Neill, John Francis Flynn, Séan Ó Túama, Eoghan Ó Ceannabháin, Ian Lynch & Gemma Dunleavy. KYNSY - WORKMANS CELLAR - DEC 2ND Another young act who is making waves at home and abroad, Kynsys got the indie pop chops down pat while exuding a cool calm demeanour at all times. Her singles and EP’s released to date have been pitch perfect slices of guitar driven alt pop with attitude - Happiness Isn’t A Fixed State is our personal fave so far. The Strokes have been cited as a touchstone but Kynsy’s sonics are far broader than the NYC upstarts. Be there is our advice. KYNSY - DEC 2ND SELLO - DEC 10TH PIC: RAY KEOGH GILLA BAND - NATION AL STADIUM - DEC 9TH For a band that pull no punches it’s a sweet irony that their biggest home headliner to date is at the home of boxing. We’ve been present at some legendary gigs there over the years (The Pixies Bossa Nova tour springs to mind) and this one is shaping up to be a classic too. Currently touring across the globe to promote their latest album Most Normal the Dublin noiseniks will be welcomed home with open arms by their legion of followers. SELLÓ - THE ACADEMY GREEN ROOM - DEC 10TH Named RTE 2FM Rising Artist and Irish Times ‘Top 50 People To Watch’ after a breakthrough year, Clondalkin artist Selló plays his first ever headline show as he showcases his acclaimed Sellotape mixtape. Pioneering Gaelic drill, the Dubliner is an authentic West Dublin voice with rapid-fire rhymes, Gaelic-samples, mesmeric storytelling abilities and infectiously simple choruses all deliciously in a mix that speaks loudly to his rapidly expanding fanbase. ELDER ISLAND DJ SET - THE GRAND SOCIAL - DEC 10TH (LATE SHOW) To announce their 2022 DJ shows, the hugely popular electro act Elder Island returned to Printworks London for a 2 hour DJ Set at the invitation of globally acclaimed DJ Solomun. Continuing with appearances at venues and festivals worldwide; Secret Garden Party (UK), Lost Village (UK), Istanbul (TUR) and a headline DJ set at Los Angeles institution Sound nightclub. Tonight it’s Dublin’s turn so get in early for what’s sure to be a banger. ONE DAY INTERNATIONAL - THE GRAND SOCIAL - DEC 11TH Great to see these guys back in action again. Fronted by our favourite Antipodean Matt Lunson, the band released the superb album Blackbird back in 2008 to critical acclaim before eventually dwindling into the ether as family commitments and other band members becoming Villagers got in the way. Expect a full house for this one and the promise of some very (very) special guests will only add to the impending excitement. PAGE 6
