Clubbing MARION HAWKES PONYHAWKE’S TOP 10 TRACKS
Belfast native Marion Hawkes has been Djing since 2011, playing all over Ireland & UK, and currently co-runs Queer night; Ponyhawke, which is now in its 6th year. At the end of 2021 she opened a record store, Sound Advice, in the vibrant East of the city. The store is a musical hub where people can come browse the large selection of carefully curated record bins, listen to in store DJ sets, enjoy late night events from jazz listening parties to talks and host like minded collaborators. “I wanted to bring back that counter culture that had been missing from Belfast for a while, we have a strong electronic scene here and it needed a dedicated space. Here’s 10 tracks that do the damage, it’s a real mixed bag reflecting the eclectic style I like to play”. 01 Overmono - So U Kno It’s been absolutely rinsed to death but still that bassline, played it at last year’s AVA and nearly caused an eruption. 02 DT & PJ - Heat-Wave Anthem A track that never fails to get a reaction, such a fun tune! If the energy is low and you need to bring the room up then look no further. 03 Alex Kassian - Leave Your Life Such a big 12” getting plays from everyone from David Holmes to Wes Baggley. All 4 tracks are lethal but the title track is a balearic beauty that’ll have you singing along, drink it in! 04 Kano - War A big Ponyhawke anthem, and rightly so! It has all the right elements to move a dance floor, a slow building disco hook and dramatic spacey synths. 05 Barry Cant Swim - Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore Bouncy high tempo track mixing early UK rave elements, very euphoric, very catchy, very now . 06 Roy Davis Jr - Gabriel (PJ Bridger dub) UKG cover of Roy Davis Jr’s classic house tune Gabriel, once the crowd hears that trumpet riff they’re yours! 07 Radiators - I Am Sure (Mario Moretti Remix) Italo vibes are the best vibes, this 1984 oddity gets a re rub for 2022 with Mario Moretti adding more punch. 08 Ian Pooley - All Nite One from the vaults, dug this out recently again for a gig and its been an ear worm ever since. Pooley along with DJ Sneak in the mid to late 90s were untouchable with that filtered chopped up disco sound. 09 Fun Fun - Happy Station One of the best tracks ever made! Camp, cheesy italo nonsense that hits in all the right places. Check the scratch mix for extra boogie points. 10 Hawke - 3 Nudes In A Purple Garden Early 90s San Fran trippiness from Gavin Hardkiss. A track that builds and adds layers as it goes, a nice one to drop on the more cerebral dancefloor. Grab it off the recent Planet Love compilation on Young Marco’s Safe Trip label. Marion Hawkes plays The Magnet Bar, 131 Thomas St on Saturday June 25th. PAGE 26 LISTEN TO MIX
