The Goo 1
who the f**k are Have you heard of Restive Nation
? Chances are, you haven’t. If you have, then you’ll know just how special this band are. Hailing from Dublin, Restive Nation are best described as a Rock/Metal/Electronic/Progressive hybrid, or for those that are not up to speed with genre definitions, they sound like Massive Attack sharing a few beverages with Killing Joke, Tool and Nine Inch Nails. Their music is a fluid mix of all of the above, but with a unique DNA that…to be honest, sounds like nothing else in the Irish music scene. Their impressive self-titled debut LP is about to hit the streets as a limited vinyl pressing, and I can’t recommend it enough. The band is yet another example of just how incredible talent gets very little exposure from Irish radio and print media. So, do yourself a favour and indulge yourself in tracks such as, ‘Revolt/ Reanimate’ and ‘Counterfeit’ and prepare to embrace one hell of a sonic experience that would put most to shame. Founding members, bassist, Ciaran Timmy Lynch and guitarist/vocalist, Chris Cahill spoke to us about their past, present and future… Tell us how Restive Nation formed. Ciarán Timmy Lynch: Myself and Chris met working together in Muzzle Music Studio. W e were both massive Nine Inch Nails fans and we got to see them live in Belfast in 2013. It was there that the seeds were planted to form a band. The initial years were all about collaborating with lots of different vocalists, but now we’ve settled on a more solid line-up. If you were to describe your sound, how would you best describe it? Chris Cahill: That’s always been a tricky one, given the ever changing and evolving nature of the band, but we describe it as “Electronic Prog Rock”. Coming from such an eclectic background, the band’s sound has, no doubt, evolved over the last six years. Where do you see the direction going in the future? Chris Cahill: We, for sure, see the project going much heavier. We also want everything more focused and centered for the next series of releases. The self-titled new album is due for a vinyl release, how many are being pressed and where can we purchase them? Ciarán Timmy Lynch: We’re getting a very small run of 300 done on 180g vinyl. The first 110 will have a limited edition 12”x12” art print of which we have a few left. It will be available on restivenation.bandcamp.com, or in store in Spindizzy records, George’s Arcade. If you had the opportunity to perform in any venue in the city with any band, who would it be and where? Ciarán Timmy Lynch: We seem to be getting compared to Killing Joke a lot these days, so I think that would be a great line-up. Preferably somewhere up close and personal with stellar sound like Vicar street. How would you best describe Restive Nation in a live setting? Chris Cahill: I think the whole selling point of the band is within the live performance. It’s extremely well laid out in terms of a narrative or live story. The audience really seem to understand us a lot more once they witness it live and see how all the sounds seem to blend so well and come together.
