The Goo 1
Clubbing Dublin based DJ collective Melodic have
been hosting some of Dublin’s best dance nights for over eleven years and on Saturday July 2nd they finally get to host their most requested guest to date, the Argentinian superstar DJ, El Maestro, Hernán Cattáneo. Founded by Mulljoy, Melodic started out in the Lost Society basement (beneath Farrier & Draper on Sth William St) with a goal to promote melody driven, underground dance music and have brought over amazing guests like Matthias Mayer, Ian Pooley, Nick Warren and Guy J to Dublin, hosting acclaimed parties in other spaces like Pyg, Grand Social, Hangar and their current home, Tengu. Running gigs for that long in a city that has treated clubbing as an irritant deserves much kudos so we were delighted to catch up with Mulljoy as he was looking forward to one of Melodic’s biggest shows. When you launched Melodic in 2011 did you think you’d still be running great parties 11 years later? To be honest we wouldn’t have thought so - we started the night initially to give ourselves more of an opportunity to play gigs and an excuse for a night out with our mates but sure here we are over a 100 gigs later! Highlights? Some of the early gigs in Lost Society Basement were amazing with the likes of Edu Imbernon & DJ Tennis standing out a swell as Guy J everywhere! More recently Patrice Baumel, Nick Warren in our home of the last few years in Tengu but there have been so many great over the years that it is hard to pick out the few. Lowlights? Not too many thankfully, obviously a few shows that just didn’t work but that’s all par for the course! Looking forward to Hernan’s set? What makes him special? Yes indeed, one we’ve been trying to make happen for a number of years & delighted it’s finally happening! Hernan is known for his extended uplifting progressive sets so 4 hours in The Button Factory should be a real treat. How healthy is Dublin clubbing at the moment? I’m sure you would like more spaces to open? We’ve found a real demand for our gigs since we’ve reopened which has been great but there really is a major shortage of spaces at the moment in Dublin. Hoping that this will change over coming years and especially in line with the extended opening hours to finally make Dublin & Ireland a clubbing destination. Are you excited by the prospect of clubs opening till 6am? It’s amazing that it’s finally happening but it’s probably about 10 years too late for an auld lad like myself unfortunately, but I am sure I will give it a go. Melodic hosts Hernán Cattáneo at the Button Factory, Saturday July 2nd, Doors: 11pm. PAGE 28 PIC: HERNANCATTANEO.COM
