Scene News NIALL MCGUIRK PUNK ROUND UP So much to
write about and so few lines to fill. Things are starting to pick up around the punk scene with bands starting to venture out and records finally seeing the light of day. It’s hard around the DIY scene as there’s no contracts or insurance policies so if a band can’t travel gigs can’t happen and people are out of pocket financially. Some punks are putting on gigs for their fellow travellers. SOME GIGS Hardcore is getting a good airing with Jesus Piece finally coming to The Grand Social on June 16. Their live shows always leave a mark as they muster all their energy into an organised chaotic mess on stage. Local hardcore stalwarts Bitter Pill and Goon are also on the bill. Cro Mags are in the same venue the following week. Cro Mags have been around since the 80’s and their explosive hardcore sound still comes across as pissed off as ever. Many say this band from New York were the first to cross that thrash metal divide. They helped define the New York hardcore sound for sure. Jesse Malin started out in that New York scene but has discovered his roots and brings that sound to town. Expect songs from any one of his 9 albums in the Workmans on the 25th. If you like your music from the garage but with a snotty punk feel, make sure not to miss the Bobby Lee’s in Whelans. They are playing late night as Bob Mould will be bringing his astounding guitar sound to the same venue earlier that night. This is a night to remember for sure. Mark those diaries in luminous ink. Dublin garage band the Black Pitts are launching their album in the Wild Duck on the 26th June. The venue is home to all Alternative Social Sunday most Sundays from 4pm where people of all ages can enjoy the music on offer. Their new album is called Nevada Jacks and for your tenner you will get a copy of the record. Absolute bargain. The great thing for me about punk is there are no rules so I can put in whoever I want. Einstürzende Neubauten surfaced out of a need to express creativity in Berlin in the 80’s, a very different Berlin to its 21st century twin. They existed to declare war on listening habits and have been motoring along unconventionally ever since. They will take over the National Concert Hall on July 3. PAGE 38
