Reggae Feature MICK HERRITY LIAM MC GURK PARTIAL
RECORDS Hackney, London. Liam worked for a distributor of reggae records called David Dubwise. Dubwise shares a building with independent reggae producer Douglas ‘Dougie’ Wardrop. Whilst chatting with Dougie, Liam is listening to one of Dougie’s new productions, a song called Financial Circumstance, Liam wonders who is releasing this tune. Dougie suggests that Liam releases the tune himself, and so Partial Records is born. The song by Dixie Peach was released in February 2013. Liam McGurk is, I suppose, London-Irish. Both his parents were born in Ireland and he is fiercely proud of his Irish heritage. Liam’s father was a session musician and spent a lot of time playing in Irish clubs and pubs in London. No surprise that Liam is passionate about music. Liam, once again, through an intervention by Dougie , got involved in the record business working for the likes of S.R.D. so he was no stranger to the runnings of the business when he decided to set up his own record label. Initial recordings happened organically without any defined mission statement. Partial have released new songs from producers on the reggae scene operating out of the UK. There is another side to Partial, they have re-issued tunes that were popular in the dances run by sound systems up and down the country in the 1990’s. In 2013, there were not many records being repressed from this period. These were the kind of tunes that Paul Fingleton, on his regular trips to London, used to seek out for his Firehouse Skank nights in The Parnell Mooney at that time. Tunes pressed in small numbers, one pressing and then finished. Partial carved themselves a niche in the marketplace for re-issuing these kinds of tunes for punters who didn’t want to spend a small fortune on original press copies. Liam, whether socialising of DJ’ing in Ireland has kept an ear out for Irish singers and producers. Partial have released records from producer DanTaliras and Irish artists Cian Finn, Lariman and Eva Keyes. Despite getting no media coverage, the singles from these artists have sold well. Eva Keyes in particular has proven very popular on the circuit with her track ‘Meditation’ getting played regularly on the Jah Shaka Sound System, before the record was released. Whilst Partial have no immediate plans for any of the Irish artists in the near future, they are sure that new releases will happen. However Partial are pleased to announce the reissue of Tena Stelin and Sound Iration’s seminal album Wicked Invention which is available on download from partialrecords. bandcamp.com. A vinyl record will follow. Partial records are always worth checking out for new and re-issued works. All their releases are available direct or you can see a nice selection of Partial’s tunes in Spindizzy Records. PAGE 40
