er the news broke that the iPod is to be discontinued, I (literally) dusted off and powered up my first generation iPod Touch. The treasures that had been stored in there for years were great to revisit; everything from My Bloody Valentine’s ‘m b v’ to ‘Interiors’ by Glasser, along with ‘Super Ape’ by Scratch & The Upsetters, and the excellent 2016 All Tvvins album ‘llVV’, which had been off my radar for the past number of years. There are those moments in an artist’s career that you recognise as significant while you’re watching them happen. If you saw Sinead O’Brien’s recent performance on Later With Jools Holland, it was one of those. Coming just ahead of her debut album Time Bend and Break the Bower, it captured Sinead and her band in the kind of form where it seems that just about anything is achievable in her career in the coming years. Cork supersonic alt pop duo LEWWAB continue to brings us excellent tracks. ‘High Speed Chase’ is the latest and perhaps their best. They relocated to Dublin last year, and you should do all that you can to get to one of their live shows. LEWWAB While we’re referencing Cork, the passing of Cathal Coughlan came as an awful shock to many. The music that he gave us through Microdisney, The Fatima Mansions, his solo career, and Telefis (alongside Jacknife Lee, pictured opposite) is as remarkable as it is diverse. He was a truly special musical creator who will be dearly missed. Lastly for now, here are some incomings and recently landed releases that you should put on your radar (if they’re not there already). Melts debut album Maelstrom was supposed to arrive last month, but it’s now being released on June 17. Pulsating is a word that’s been used quite a lot in describing Nixer’s People Feel EP, and it certainly encapsulates the energy that they harnessed over the six tracks. Don’t deprive yourself the opportunity to listen to Irish producer Lullahush. The single ‘Our Glass Lake’ arrived last month, promptly followed by the album A City Made of Water and Small Love; both are stunning.
