New Swedish Books 8 Not Yet The Time Europe has a
lways been a continent traversed by pilgrimages, armies, violent epidemics, cargoes, trade. All this has led to encounters, creating history. And in history, we see the past reflected in the present, and the birth of the present itself. Elin Boardy’s novel starts in the year 1350, as the Black Death is raging. A woman has lost her family, and wanders from Scandinavia through the continent. Dressed at times as a man, at times as a woman, going by many names, she meets different fortunes in towns, in villages and on the roads. We are with her in that time, but we also see the present, the events of several hundred years in the future. The different perspectives give the book a depth that stretches across the centuries, but the novel is also a loving portrait of a lost human being and her struggle with life. Elin Boardy sees the people who make the history, and the story is filtered through the layers of knowledge and dramatic and stylistic flair that she once again shows she possesses.
