New Swedish Books 12 Mirage Mirage consists of 12
short stories, with at least as many perfectly crafted destinies. They all stand out like parentheses in the everyday routines carrying on around them. An older man suddenly becomes the chair of the local library association, and gets lumped with a campaign to save the library; a pair of young women dip their toes into artistic circles in Paris and Geneva; fifty years ago, an Italian woman met a Swedish holidaymaker; the editor of an arts magazine gets on the wrong side of life; a young writer gets a bad review . . . and many more. Oline Stig sees them all. They have manners and faults, dreams and hopes, everything is constantly in a state of change or becoming. She observes and narrates with a sharp gaze and forgiving humour – for the one who can see sees all sides. She pinpoints her locations perfectly: Stockholm, Gothenburg, Rimini, Paris and other places. Oline Stine’s language flows in a way that borrows at once from oral storytelling and written literature. That, and her sense of timing and drama, makes reading her an absolute joy.
