21 Spring 2017 Creation Much of human history is
a tale of coming to terms with our shortcomings, overcoming evil and misunderstanding. Kjell Espmark is a novelist, literary scholar and poet. He has a great ability to find the human stories that embody and encompass a time, an idea or a fragment of history. In a poetry collection like Creation, these figures form a garland of life, and a story not only of individuals, but of humankind itself. At the centre is our talent for creating both the most terrible and the most wonderful things. In Creation, we see this flickering, from Old Testament times, through the centuries to our own time: everything we have done and continue to do to and for one another. Kjell Espmarkās poems show us that beauty and the darkest depths are each prerequisites for the other.
