WHAT TO SEE THIS WINTER 24 January The Nutcracker
The premiere of the Nutcracker ballet went ahead at the Marinkij Theatre in St. Petersburg in 1892. The Nutcracker is a tale that unites several different themes – a merry Christmas atmosphere and a secretive mystique, something that is characteristic for E.T.A. Hoffmanns works. For the audience – grown-ups as well as children – this ballet show has become an exciting and enchanting New Year’s story, since almost no Christmas and New Years period passes by without the presence of the wonderful and insightful heroes of this tale. Now through Malmö Live’s efforts to showcase classic Russian ballet Malmö gets the opportunity to experience the traditional and legendary ballet during a couple of performances in late January. Malmö Live 3-4 March 3 February Oddjob Goran Kajfes, his trumpet and fellow musicians have for almost two decades given us new takes on jazz music and explored new expressions. Expect a magnificent and memorable night. Malmö Live Exhibitions Mats Bäcker Classics The photographer Mats Bäcker initiated his long career in Malmö by photographing the local punk scene and freelance for music magazines like Schlager documenting visiting greats like Iggy Pop, The Jam, Bowie and The Clash. Now it has come full circle through an exhibition about his photography here in the same city where it all began. From the rock photography in the ‘70s and ‘80s Bäcker has gone on to strive for dismantling the walls that usually exists in between classical music’s musicians and its audience and to renew that genre’s imagery. The exhibition Mats Bäcker Classics is comprised of both new and old photos of artists, both unknown and well-known. Among the more famous names we find Björn Afzelius, Philip Glass, Nina Persson and Elvis Costello and among the newer output there are several images shot in Malmö recently where current Malmö musicians are in focus. Mats Bäcker Classics is on display until 10 January. 38
