LFV also assisted the Sundsvall-Timrå airport in their application for a new environmental permit. DIRECT ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT LFV also affects the environment through its own operations. Internal environmental work is conducted in a structured and systematic manner and is supported by LFV’s environmental management system, which is certified according to ISO 14000:2015. The purpose is to reduce energy use and fuel consumption in its operations. In order to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, LFV works with both behavioural changes and other measures, such as investments in energy-saving technology. The following significant environmental aspects have been in focus during the year: • energy use in buildings and other structures • refrigerants used to cool buildings • emissions due to business trips • emissions from flight calibrations • procurement and purchase of products and services • waste management. ENERGY CONSUMPTION LFV’s goal is to reduce its energy consumption by 10 percent during the period 2015–2019 (base year 2012). In 2018, usage increased by 7 percent. This increase was due to the cold start of the year and the fact that more operational electricity was used than in recent years for cooling our facilities during the unusually hot summer period. LFV uses energy for running and heating/cooling its owned and rented premises. Apart from that, most energy consumption goes to the operational systems used at LFV’s air traffic management facilities. Emissions from energy use are kept at a low level because LFV buys only green electricity. 74 percent of the PROGRESS ON THE TARGET TO REDUCE ENERGY CONSUMPTION 2016 Target Result -3.4% -2% 2017 Target Result -6.1% -2% 2018 Target Result +7% -2% energy used for heating is renewable, and the goal is for this percentage to increase. BUSINESS TRIPS LFV’s goal is to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from business trips by 2 percent annually between 2015–2019. The increase in 2018 was 15.5 percent. One important reason for this is that there has been a focus on large programmes and projects as well as some changes that were made in the services that are performed. LFV is working to reduce emissions from business trips, partly by reducing the number of trips and partly by choosing modes of transport that use as little fossil fuel as possible. The aim is to replace physical meetings with virtual ones whenever possible, and this also increased by 29 percent in 2018. FLIGHT CALIBRATIONS In connection with the performance of flight calibrations, LFV plans to carry out these calibrations as geographically close to each other as possible. PROCUREMENT AND PURCHASING Since 2018, LFV has complied with sustainability requirements set by the National Agency for Public Procurement. This ensures that LFV continuously develops the way that sustainability requirements are handled in connection with our procurements. EMISSION REDUCTIONS The measures taken by LFV to reduce emissions from its own operations are not sufficient to achieve climate neutrality. LFV therefore buys certificates from projects aimed at emission reductions in developing countries and that also contribute to social and economic development. Certificates are purchased in amounts equivalent to the emissions generated by LFV’s operations.
