Cities of Refuge 1
Libraries and cultural centres The library is oft
en an important institution in the work of a City of Refuge. Freedom of expression is important to many, and there is every reason to involve museums, theatres and artistic centres, if available. When artists in residence meet people in the city’s cultural institutions, useful networks often develop. Universities and media—television, radio, newspapers The expert knowledge and experience of artists in residence is often highly valued by universities as well as the media, such as local or national television, radio stations and newspapers. It is not uncommon for artists in residence to have been associated with, or had close cooperation with, universities and the media in their home country. Opportunities for establishing links and availability for assignments following the residency may well increase if there is already good cooperation with these establishments. Artists in residence are often appreciated as lecturers at upper secondary schools and adult education centres. Independent cultural life and association membership Within the domestic and international cities of refuge network, there are independent and private actors that work with artists in various fields, such as publishers, music producers, theatres, literary festivals, meeting venues, educational associations etc. These are important in order for artists to be able to establish themselves in Sweden and build a professional network. National interest organisations The ICORN programme has broad support across the country’s cultural life. A number of national cultural operators offer membership, advice and support on various issues for artists during their residency period. These national operators are important, since they are able to provide artists in residence with a wide network of contacts with publishers, fairs, places of residence, galleries, studios to work in and theatres/venues in Sweden as well as abroad. Visit the websites of the cultural organisations connected with the artistic field the hosted artists specialises in; they often contain tips and advice, as well as links to artistic residencies, scholarships and funds. See the list of organisations at the end of this publication. 23/49
