ANNUAL REPORT 2017 Environment ENVIRONMENT SUSTAIN
ABLE AVIATION Aviation affects the environment and the climate. LFV’s mission from the Government includes working towards a sustainable aviation. In cooperation with our partners we develop airspace, procedures, and system support to create better prerequisites for a reduced environmental impact, when it comes to emissions as well as noise. Aviation and environment is a focus area in the Government's national aviation strategy, with the ambition to reduce the environmental and climate impact of aviation. For LFV, the environment issue is a priority, and the ambition is to be the most environmentally efficient air traffic service in Europe. Aviation stands for around 2–3 per cent of the global carbon dioxide emissions, and 4–5 per cent of all climate affecting emissions, including nitrogen oxide. The air traffic service's affect on the total aviation emissions is assessed to be around 6 per cent. The objective is an annual reduction of the carbon dioxide emissions in the Swedish airspace with 1,000 tonnes per year on average over the period 2014–2019. Straight flight routes Straigther flight routes entails significantly lower fuel consumption, and thus reduced emissions of carbon dioxide. As one of nine members, LFV is a part of the Borealis Alliance, which runs an extensive project 18 for straighter flight routes in the member state's airspaces, Free Route Airspace, FRA. The estimate is that, in 2020, the annual reduction of emissions should be around 146,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide, and 641,000 tonnes of nitrogen oxide. LFV works to reduce the number of people who are exposed to aviation noise, through, as far as possible, leading the aircraft to routes beside urban areas. Green approaches, which among other things are conducted at Stockholm Arlanda Airport, reduce the noise since the aircraft glides during a large part of the approach. LFV works contiously to reduce emissions and noise from aviation. The focus is on the aircraft's movements, work methods, and technology systems. Surveys and analyses Airspaces and routes are designed to be efficient and optimal from a sustainability perspective. LFV offer support to the airports in their work with environment testing and environmental appraisal and How to manage air traffic in an environmentally friendly way is an important part in the training of air traffic controllers. environmental permits, which minimises the environmental impact concerning noise and emissions. To create change and reduce the environmental impact of aviation, you must know where the deficiencies are, how large they are, and what to do to rectify them. LFV has developed an analysis tool, which processes millions of radar tacks and other data from the air traffic control system TopSky, to assess how environmenLFV ANNUAL REPORT 2017
