VIGNETTE Together with the Swedish Transport Agen
cy and the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI), LFV completed a project in 2017, aiming to improve calculations of emissions in the Swedish airspace. As a result, FOI has refined the calculation model and reducing the difference between the calculated and actually flown distance. Through implementing a fuel model in LFV’s radar analysis tool, LFV contributes to FOI and the Swedish Transport Agency being able to do more precise calculations of the emissions from aviation in the Swedish airspace. LFV will also be able to analyse the fuel effects from various changes in airspace and working methods. This creates benefit and value for all. LFV has contributed its route expertise to airports, regarding environmental permit processes. In 2017 LFV has assisted Swedavia with aviation expert knowledge in a number of surveys and projects. In addition, LFV has assisted Karlstad Airport in their application for a new environmental permit, as well as with analyses of flight patterns at Åre Östersund Airport. tally optimal the traffic flows are, where the deficiencys can be found, and what to do to rectify them. Commissioned by Swedavia, LFV conducts environmental analyses of the company's airports. The work commenced in 2016 with Åre Östersund Airport. In 2017, analyses of Umeå Airport and Malmö Airport were conducted. In 2018, several implementations of changes are planned, among others at Malmö Airport and Stockholm Arlanda Airport, which is expected to entail large reductions of emissions. Speed limits for civil aviation During fall 2017 LFV commenced a preliminary study regarding the prerequisites for introducing a general speed limit for all civil jet traffic descending into Swedish airports. Lower speeds reduce the fuel consumption, and thus also the emissions. The activity is supported by Swedavia and the large airlines with traffic to and from the Swedish airports. According to plan, it will be implemented at the turn of the year 2018/19. LFV ANNUAL REPORT 2017 Sustainable education Our employees' knowledge of the environmental impact of aviation is important for LFV to carry out active environmental in the daily work. All new employees at LFV are to undergo a basic environmental training programme, which is then repeated at least every other year, and an in-depth part is included in the training of operative management. How to manage air traffic in an environment-friendly manner is an important part of the training for air traffic controllers, which is done at Entry Port North at Malmö Airport. During the year more than 120 air traffic controllers were trained. To manage the traffic in the most environment-friendly manner primarily concerns the approach and departure phases. For example, it can be to avoid having the aircraft waiting before landing, to approach and depart by the shortest route, and to glide towards the runway, when possible. 120 The number of air traffic controllers LFV trained in eco-driving in 2017. 2-3 per cent is the aviation part of the global carbon dioxide emissions. 19
