ANNUAL REPORT 2017 Director-General's Statement
ANNUAL REPORT 2017 LFV is with you on the travel L
FV IS WITH YOU WHEN TRAVELLING LFV’s air traffic controllers manages more than 2,000 flights in the Swedish airspace every day. Their assignment is to guide the pilots and separate the aircrafts vertically and laterally. In addition, they ensure that the flights are as efficient as possible by making them take the shortest routes so they won't have to standby waiting in the air. Here, we follow Eva, when she travels from Stockholm to Luleå. Before every flight, no matter if it is from Arlanda to Luleå or Bangkok, extensive preparatory work is performed at the airport, at the airlines, and at LFV. When we, as in this example, follow a flight from Stockholm to Luleå, we describe what LFV does before, during, and after the flight. Every shift for an LFV controller starts by going through the day's conditions and current flights. To sit in position means controlling and monitoring traffic and being in contact with the pilots operating in Swedish airspace. Flights in the upper Swedish airspace are handled from the control centers in Stockholm and Malmö, while the towers and the control center for remote air traffic services handle the takeoff and landing phases. THE DAY BEFORE DEPARTURE. Eva packs her bag for the trip to Luleå. LFV’s Flight Planning Center, FPC, recieves the flight plan from the airline and sends it to Eurocontrol, and sends it on to the flight control towers and air traffic controllers in question. The Air Traffic Control Center, ATCC in Stockholm ensures that LFV has the right staffing during the morning work shift the next day, and checks how tomorrow's weather and other factors may affect the capacity. 20 hours before the estimated start, the flight plan arrives to FPC, which checks that the airline has requested the weather information. THE DAY OF DEPARTURE. THREE HOURS BEFORE DEPARTURE. TWO HOURS BEFORE DEPARTURE. Eva travels to Arlanda. The flight plan contains information about the type of aircraft, route, and heights etc. and is entered into the air navigation management system. Time for security control. The pilots get information about the weather on the route and the airports in question. FPC also informs about other factors which may affect the flight. It may for example be that a runway is being asphalted, snow-clearance, or that a military exercise is in progress in the Baltic sea area. ONE HOUR BEFORE DEPARTURE. Eva takes a cup of coffee in the cafeteria at the airport. LFV’s shift manager checks the current load for each sector in the control center. Information about the flight is shown in the first sector, which will handle it. HALF AN HOUR BEFORE DEPARTURE. Time to go to the gate. LFV’s controller has managed the previous flight, the aircraft has landed and taxied to its parking space. The process to make the aircraft ready for start begins right away. There are lot of passengers at the gate. Unloading, cleaning, and fueling of the aircraft are done by the airport staff and there are a lot of movements on the apron. 4 LFV ANNUAL REPORT 2017
