OPTIMISED SHARING OF THE AIRSPACE LFV’s researchi
ng collaboration with partners, has gained much attention, both nationally and internationally. Not the least remote air traffic services. ning a research project for airspace optimisation; among other things, unmanned aircraft is modelled and demonstrated in a realistic urban environment through interactive 3D visualisation. Through a close collaboration between affected actors and the usage of new technology, more can get access to the airspace in a safe and sustainable manner. SWEAO (Swedish En route Airspace Optimisation), is a project for evaluating the optimal distribution of the upper airspace through modelling. Competence and staffing KODIC, competency, capacity, and optimisation in a digital air traffic management centre is a collaboration project with LFV ANNUAL REPORT 2017 Linköping University. The first part was completed in February 2017, and concerned how the traffic can be distributed between operators, depending on traffic flows, labour legislation, and workload. LFV invests resources in increasing the understanding of how new requirements in a digitalised and more automated environment affects the individual and group performance. The challenges exist in all modes of transport, and the participants consist of a wide array of national actors, and the Swedish Transport Agency. Collaboration and strategic partnerships In 2017 around twenty projects and four preliminary studies were carried out in collaboration with senior researchers and doctoral students. Among others, we collaborate with Linköping University, Chalmers University of Technology, Lund University, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute, Vinnova, SAAB, Eurocontrol, and Innaxis. The research is also conducted within the framework of the European research programme for air traffic management, SESAR. The Swedish Transport Agency, Vinnova, and Horizon 2020, the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation, are the major funders of LFV’s research. In 2017, Leo Sedov, doctoral student at Linköping University, was awarded the "LFV innovation scholarship" for the work with developing methods and tools for optimising sectorisation, i.e. a division of the Swedish airspace. The work was carried out as a preliminary study in collaboration with the Swedish Transport Agency. “Designing airspaces is a complex work.” "I have produced proposals for sectorisation of the airspace through mathemathical modelling. These sectorisations must then be tested with operative experts. The meetings we have had, gave me insights in the complexity of designing airspaces and that more work is needed," says Leo Sedov. "It is important to see how the academia can support, in this case airspace design, by creating tools to be able to quickly evaluate and see the effects of different sectorisations. The changes of airspaces takes time. That is why a longterm collaboration with the academia is a prerequisite and a success factor," says Ulf Thibblin, Technical Director at LFV. Leo Sedow will use the scholarship to visit conferences to learn more about air traffic management. 23
