TION DEVELOPS THE AIRSPACES OF THE FUTURE LFV pursues research and innovation in a number of strategic development areas, based on the society's, the customers' and LFV’s future challenges. The objective is to develop new concepts and solutions to improve safety, efficiency, capacity, availability, and sustainability. Examples of current research areas are aviation safety, optimised use of airspaces, as well as the human role and performance. It could also entail new forms of collaboration between humans and automation, as well as integration of unmanned aircraft in the airspace. One research area which has increased due to new technology and digitalisation is the production and development of templates and methods for risk analysis and proof of safety. The collaboration within the transport sector is increasing. The collaboration with the Swedish Maritime Administration and the Swedish Traffic Agency has been strengthened during the year. Digitalisation clear the way for automation Remote air traffic services has become a reality and the air traffic management for Örnsköldsvik Airport and Sundsvall Timrå Airport is currently managed from LFV’s control centre in Sundsvall. The experiences 22 are very positive. The value for aviation safety is large since all information is recorded and stored and is available for analysis. In addition, digitalisation makes it possible for en route to develop. It could, e.g. be in regard to flexibility between Stockholm and Malmö, or within the COOPANS collaboration. For the air traffic controllers it is important to understand the possibilities and limitations of automation. Automation level require new skills. To strengthen the training of operators is an important issue, managed in the project RESKILL, for air traffic management, as well as in maritime navigation. Algorithms and artificial intelligence (AI) are necessary components in analysing the large amounts of data, coming from a digitalised air traffic service. It is especially important that information can be shared in a secure manner between actors, to be able to perform better in cooperation. Augmented Reality is surveyed in a preliminary study to investigate the benefit and value of the technology for air traffic management, training, and surveillance. LFV also participates in Safeclouds, an EU project for better understanding of the air traffic controllers' situation, and to analyse the huge amounts of logged data to find patterns in advance, and be able to identify situations, which could lead to critical incidents. LFV’s researching collaboration with partners, has gained much attention, both nationally and internationally. Not the least remote air traffic services. The airspace is a limited resource The number of actors wanting to use the airspace is increasing. For many services, e.g. surveillance and data gathering for different purposes, the access to the airspace is a deciding factor. LFV works to give the actors the best possible access to the airspace.
